ON STARTING OUT

I’ve been told that I used to sit as a child and draw quietly, unaware of absolutely anything that’s going on around me, nothing’s really changed in that respect; it became the running joke with my family that I live in my own little world.

I studied various things, Contemporary fine arts and Communication design; which really aided in learning what I was good at, and also what I really didn’t want to do. For me, all I’ve ever really wanted to do is to create beautiful things.

The Good Type Co has been on my mind for a long time; during my studies, whenever I had a project that allowed for absolute creative freedom, I would go off on a massive tangent (Much to my lecturers dismay). For instance I created a series of wooden blocks with hand-illustrated robots that you could rotate and move to create different combinations. This project was insanely time intensive, completely budget blowing and not really cost effective in any way. But I made it all by hand, from drawing, printing to painstakingly cutting and gluing every side and piece by hand. A complete rabbit hole of a project, not perfect, but it taught me a lot about production, and that even without all the necessary skills at first (I’m really not a woodworker) that I could make anything if I put my mind to it. I pulled resources, asked favors and got it done.

This is the aim of The Good Type Co, using the abundance amazing resources around me; my fantastically talented illustrator friends Shinsuke Saito and Lydia Humphreys and valued input from across the pond from the wonderful Hilary Freeth and attempting to build a business. Much like creating those blocks, we don’t know the ins and outs of business, we’re probably completely out of our depth, but we love it, so shit we’re going to do it anyway.

With the philosophy of if you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all; we aim to not be just another print store. We want to make things by hand, pick great materials, use local printers, and curate our content to bring you interesting, quality products.

We hope you enjoy seeing us grow and enjoy our products as much as we love making them for you.
